Updated November 2026: dead links removed, addresses brought up to date and new resources added. The list started life in 2009 and a lot of the web has moved on since then!
Translation Portals and Communities
- Translatum (the Translation Vortal) – still by far the richest Greek site dedicated to translation. Worth exploring the many threads to share and learn. Don’t miss the Translatum Forum and its list of Greek dictionaries.
- Lexilogia – a great online translation community with lively discussions and sharing of ideas and help.
- ProZ – a meeting point for professional translators around the globe. It also advertises translation jobs you can bid for, and its KudoZ term help section is where you can ask colleagues to help you resolve a particularly sticky translation problem.
- WordReference Forums – busy language forums where translators and native speakers argue (politely, mostly!) over meaning and usage, with an English–Greek section.
- TranslatorsCafé – another large international community with forums, a term help area and job listings.
Bilingual and Multilingual Dictionaries
- IATE – still the best I have seen – the EU’s terminology database, bidirectional, all EU languages. If you open the full entry for a term, you can see it used in different contexts and fields.
- Georgakas Greek–English Dictionary – a scholarly Greek–English dictionary, free on the Portal for the Greek Language.
- Cambridge English–Greek Dictionary – reliable, learner-friendly, with examples.
- WordReference English–Greek – quick lookups, with links straight into the forum discussions for tricky terms.
- Glosbe English–Greek – shows translations together with example sentences from real bilingual texts – very handy, but check the sources.
- Linguee – searches millions of professionally translated sentence pairs, so you can see how others have rendered a phrase.
English Dictionaries
- OneLook Dictionaries – simultaneous lookup in dozens of dictionaries; also good for finding a word you can only half-describe.
- Cambridge Dictionary
- Oxford Learner’s Dictionaries – very good for double-checking meaning, collocation and register.
- Merriam-Webster – the American reference, free online.
- Collins Dictionary – corpus-based definitions with real examples.
- YourDictionary.com
- Dictionary.com
- Wiktionary – the free collaborative dictionary; surprisingly useful for etymology and for new words.
- FreeDict – free bilingual dictionaries you can download for offline use.
English Thesauruses
- Thesaurus.com – not just for looking up related words; there are word games and quizzes too.
- Merriam-Webster Thesaurus
- Power Thesaurus – crowd-sourced synonyms, ranked by how useful users find them.
- Roget’s Thesaurus – the classic, via Project Gutenberg.
- Visual Thesaurus – shows words as a map of connected meanings (subscription, but there is a free trial).
- SnappyWords – a free visual dictionary and thesaurus: type a word and watch its meanings, synonyms and related words branch out on screen.
- Visuwords – another free visual thesaurus that draws a word’s meanings and connections as an interactive diagram – great for exploring shades of meaning.
- Green’s Dictionary of Slang – you’ve just arrived and you can’t understand the local slang? Don’t despair – this is the most thorough slang dictionary there is, free online.
- Bosworth-Toller Anglo-Saxon Dictionary – for anyone working with Old English.
- Vocabulary.com – friendly explanations plus vocabulary-building games.
- Lexipedia – a free visual thesaurus that maps a word’s synonyms, antonyms and related meanings, colour-coded by part of speech
Concordancing and Corpus Tools
A concordancing programme will ‘call up’ a word from a corpus of collected texts and show it on your screen along with its co-text.
- Greek corpora on the Portal for the Greek Language – Greek text collections you can search (this replaces the old Komvos corpus search).
- SkELL (English) – free, simple corpus search showing example sentences, collocations and similar words. My favourite for quick checks.
- COCA – Corpus of Contemporary American English (English) – over a billion words of current English from fiction, magazines, newspapers, academic texts, TV and film, spoken English and the web. Brilliant for checking collocations, frequency and register; free registration.
- English-Corpora.org (English) – Mark Davies’ corpora, including COCA and the BNC; free registration.
- Compleat Lexical Tutor (English) – concordancers and many other tools for working with texts.
- Ozdic Collocation Dictionary (English) – quick look-up of common collocations.
Greek Language Dictionaries
Most of the Greek dictionaries that used to live on the old Komvos site have moved to the Portal for the Greek Language, where you can also search several dictionaries at once.
- Λεξικό της Κοινής Νεοελληνικής – Τριανταφυλλίδη
- Αντίστροφο Λεξικό
- Επιτομή του Λεξικού της Μεσαιωνικής Ελληνικής Δημώδους Γραμματείας – Κριαρά
- Λεξικό Γλωσσολογικών Όρων – dictionary of linguistic terms.
- Logeion – searches the Liddell-Scott-Jones lexicon and other classical Greek and Latin dictionaries in one go.
- Perseus Digital Library – classical Greek texts with English translations and word-by-word lookup.

Something that barely existed for Greek when I first wrote this post! Machine translation is now part of most translators’ working day – but everything it produces needs careful post-editing and checking.
- DeepL – machine translation, including Greek.
- Google Translate
- OmegaT – free, open-source CAT (computer-assisted translation) tool with translation memory – a good way for trainees to learn how CAT tools work.
- Matecat – free, browser-based CAT tool.
