Because most of the tools are also social networking tools, curating is a great first step to get connected with other like-minded teachers from around the world.
Just got back from Liverpool IATEFL 2013 where I went for my annual inspiration shot - connecting with the profession and the latest ideas and concerns was an incredible experience once again This year, and for the first time in a long while, I did a joint presentation with Shaun Wilden, co-moderator on the weekly #ELTchat hashtagged conversation on Twitter.

Presenting language in small fragments hoping that they will one day automatically transform into fluent near-native talk may not be enough. My talk at TESOL Greece highlighted some ways in which skilled performers achieve excellence and focused on practical activities promoting holistic language learning using a variety of free online tools.

Creating machinima for learning languages provides teachers with a great opportunity to embed language in a context of use rather than present it to the learners only through audio -- without the benefit of the images and the features of the context surrounding the language.

Marisa Constantinides: Creating Creative Teachers
Recording available from the same page
The activities will help teachers to explore the role of creativity in the classroom both in the sense of helping students to express their unique creative identity and also by helping them to think about and use language in a creative way.

Learning & Unlearning Teaching in the 21st Century: C’s
teachers need to get and C’s they need to lose Mavi
Learning teaching has always involved Creating, Critiquing, Class research
and experimentation as key attributes and skills; to these we need to add
Collaborating and Connecting for the teachers we want to develop in changing
times to help them deal with new information, new technologies, new tools,
new ideas, new techniques and new ways of learning.
But to get to the learning stage, some unlearning is also necessary; Complacency,
lack of Curiosity, staying well within one’s Comfort zone are just a few
of the difficulties. Unlearning can be much more difficult than learning;
values are the hardest to dislodge and careful steps and strong support are
needed for those involved in developing teachers and for teachers wishing to
continue their own professional development
During my talk, I hope to be able to show some ways in which this learning
and unlearning can be achieved more successfully.
